First off, this is coming from someone who has read both Twilight and Harry Potter. I fell in love with both series, but for many reasons I favor Harry Potter.
Twilight, while generally appealing, cannot compare to Harry Potter in its depth, plot, character development, or provocativeness. Twilight is extremely easy to fall in love with. The first time I read it, I was completely swept off my feet by Edward, Bella, and all of the other lovable Cullens. Then, months later, the obsession strted to wear off. I was no longer rabid or crazed about Twilight… and I realized how shallow the entire series was!
Twilight is virtually plotless. I can summarize the entire series in just a few simple phrases. There should be ZERO debate over the complexity between the two series. Obviously, Harry Potter is the deeper story.
If you ask me, Twilight features a lovely, classic story of the girl trying to win over the unavailable but desirable guy. It encompasses some amazing characters and satisfies the cravings of teenage readers. Yet, Stephenie Meyer\’s writing craft and framework has some major flaws. She flip-flops between many different voices, and lacks anything unique about her narrorations that truly defines her as a writer. Her writing is sloppy and all over the place- rushed and unseamed like a quilt with holes around the edges.
Compare this to the gorgeous craft of Harry Potter. JK Rowling knows how to write. She uses symbolism and provokes questions from her readers. The controversial issues in her books, such as sexual orientation, nature over nuture, the struggle between good and evil are timeless and well-thought out, where the only outbursts Twilight has ever brought about were trivial topics, such as space heater vs air conditioning and teen love.
In short, Harry Potter is a terrific, well-rounded book. It encompasses all the elements a book needs to become a classic- plot, characters, struggle, writer\’s craft, and originality especially. For JK Rowling, Harry Potter wasn\’t some instant success or hairbrained, amature attempt at a romance novel. She worked for her success, and gave her writing her all, thus creating an entirely new world. But Stephenie Meyer? Between baby-sitting her kids and watching American Idol, she threw a book together and decided to call it a masterpiece. It\’s ridiculous why so many people should be obsessed with a novel that is so obviously primitive and ambiguous. Twilight would actually deserve its fame if the writer could get a clue! Nice try, SM, but next time, could you please make your world a bit more realistic?
Harry Potter makes you believe that Hogwarts exists, and become emotionally torn as the characters you have gotten to know so well slip away. Twilight makes you fawn over hot guys and debate over what having sex with a rock would feel like. Anybody seeing the difference?
Harry Potter and Twilight are too different to compare, anyway. Read Twilight if you want a quick little flop… and read Harry Potter if you\’re ready for your life to be changed forever.
In conclusion… Harry Potter will always pwn. There should be, and is, no serious debate. Twilight will fade away in a few years, and soon no one will even remember it. But Harry Potter will always be with us. Twilight fails to leave a genuine mark on your heart. It\’s not a book, it\’s a craze. And so Twilight fans, get a life and get over it! Go read something worth your while.
